Socially Engaged Art

As socially engaged artists the students shared artworks which included photos, videos and spoken word from political protests. As curators, they also shared these artworks in the gallery with the public and with the intent of engaging in dialogical encounters. The conversations, as a critical pedagogy of place, included the re-telling of stories of place from the students’ lived experiences in the world. A few of the students shared images of their work with a local activist group, called ‘People Over Profits’, figure 8. The group fights for prisoner rights and against the profiteering rampant in the prison system. This issue was relevant to the students because of the high prevalence of private prison furlough programs in Barrio Logan and the large number of Chicanas/os incarcerated. In conjuncture with the activist group, and as a collaborative curatorial practice, we held events at Liminal Gallery. The events provided a space for people of all ages to come together to organize for protests and share in the struggles faced by families affected by the prison system’s inhuman practices, such as solitary confinement. The coming together was done through open mics, musical performances and informal gatherings.
